What is the difference between the online version and the
in-person version of Taking the Mystery Out of the Subsurface?

The online version of Taking the Mystery Out of the Subsurface was introduced in August 2020. It is designed for individuals and begins with this INTRO VIDEO while progressing with a live introductory phone interview and three online course modules. It includes a 50+ page notebook with tutorials, a USCS Calibrated Baseline Soil Kit, and a final exam.

The in-person version of Taking the Mystery Out of the Subsurface, Learning to Translate the Sedimentary Sequence to Soil Boring Logs is the newest training. It is designed for groups in a conference room where everyone is present together. It includes a notebook, a USCS Calibrated Baseline Soil Kit, tutorials, and a final exam.

The content of each course is not exactly the same.

The online version spends more time with the details of classifying soil using the Unified Soil Classification System, where the in-person course teaches USCS soil classification along with some hints to simplify the procedures.

The in-person course walks through the steps of stratigraphic analysis, where the online course teaches the overall concepts but without detailed examples.

Both courses include exercises and tutorials for identifying baseline soil classifications, recognizing the differences between soil classification and stratigraphic characterization, and building the stratigraphic framework in the field.
